Stainless Steel Nameplates

Hallmark Nameplate manufactures custom stainless steel nameplates and custom stainless steel plates in 304, 316, and 430 grades.

When an application demands maximum corrosion resistance, high-heat tolerance, or a plate that outlasts the equipment it's mounted on, stainless is the material engineers specify. It resists rust, chemicals, saltwater, and extreme temperatures, making it the standard for chemical processing, marine, food-service, and high-heat engine environments.

Our stainless steel nameplates meet military, ANSI, UL, and CSA specifications and are built to order at our ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 13485:2016 certified, ITAR-registered facility in Mt. Dora, Florida. Stainless stock is kept in-house, which means shorter lead times and no offshore sourcing delays.

Stainless Steel Grades We Work With

Hallmark Nameplate produces custom stainless steel plates in three primary grades, each selected for a specific balance of corrosion resistance, cost, and appearance. Our team recommends the right grade based on your environment, compliance requirements, and budget.

304 ~18% chromium, ~8% nickel, low carbon, balance iron Excellent general corrosion resistance; weldable and formable General-purpose industrial nameplates, indoor and outdoor ID plates, control panels Excellent - etches, laser-marks, and screen-prints cleanly
316 ~16% chromium, ~10% nickel, 2-3% molybdenum Superior chloride and acid resistance; marine and food-grade Marine, chemical processing, pharmaceutical, food-service, and washdown environments Excellent - same as 304 with added chemical durability
430 16-18% chromium, minimal nickel (ferritic) Lower cost, bright decorative finish, magnetic Decorative plates, indoor asset tags, appliance ID, budget-sensitive runs Good - etches and prints well; lower corrosion resistance than 304/316

Grade Selection Explained

304 Stainless Steel

The default for most applications. It delivers strong corrosion resistance, takes graphics well, and is cost-effective across indoor and outdoor industrial environments.

316 Stainless Steel

Adds molybdenum for superior resistance to chlorides and acids. Choose 316 for marine exposure, de-icing salt, chemical contact, or food and medical washdown applications where 304 is not enough.

430 Stainless Steel

A ferritic, magnetic grade. Choose it when the budget is the priority, the environment is mild or indoor, or the application requires a magnetic plate.

Stainless Steel Nameplate Uses by Thickness

Thickness drives both rigidity and mounting method. The 0.020" stock is the most popular general-purpose option because it is structurally stable and cost-effective. Thinner material is used for flexible labels and insert plates, while heavier gauges are specified for control panels, machine plates, and structural identification.

0.005"-0.012" Thin flexible labels, foil-style tags, insert plates Flexible; conforms to curved surfaces Adhesive, insert
0.020" General-purpose equipment identification (most popular) Structurally stable, cost-effective Adhesive, rivets
0.025"-0.032" Serialized nameplates, adhesive-mounted asset tags Optimal rigidity for adhesive bonding 3M adhesive (Preferred Converter)
0.040"-0.063" Control panels, instrument bezels, machine plates Rigid; withstands mechanical stress Screws, bolts, rivets
0.090"-0.125" Heavy-duty equipment plates, valve tags, structural ID Maximum rigidity, impact and heat resistant Bolts, standoffs, welding

Stainless Steel Marking & Finishes

Finish determines the appearance of your custom stainless steel plates, while the marking method determines how the graphics are applied and how long they last. Hallmark Nameplate offers a full range of both.

Brushed / Satin (#4) Directional brushed grain with a refined satin appearance. Professional indoor and outdoor plates, decorative identification.
Mirror Polished (#8) Highly reflective, polished surface. High-visibility corporate identity and premium rating plates.
Bead-Blasted / Matte Uniform, non-directional matte texture. Glare-free panels and high-contrast backgrounds for marking.
Chemical (Acid) Etching Acid recesses the graphics into the metal; recesses can be paint-filled for contrast. Deep, permanent, wear-proof graphics for mil-spec and harsh environments.
Laser Marking / Annealing Laser creates a high-contrast or oxide-annealed mark with no material loss. High-resolution variable data, barcodes, serialization, and corrosion-safe medical marks.
Electrochemical Etching A stencil, electrolyte, and current produce surface or recessed marks. Fast serialization, UID marking, and shop-floor traceability.
Screen Printing (Epoxy Ink) Durable epoxy inks printed on the surface. Multi-color graphics, logos, and instructional plates.
Embossing / Debossing Raised or recessed formed characters. Tactile identification and durable serial plates readable without ink.

Chemical (Acid) Etched Stainless Steel

Etching is one of the most durable ways to mark stainless steel. Acid recesses the image below the surface of the metal, so the graphics resist wear, fading, or rubbing off. Etched recesses can be filled with paint or enamel for high contrast. This process is the standard for valve tags, rating plates, and any plate exposed to abrasion or chemicals.

Laser-Marked Stainless Steel

Laser marking produces crisp, high-resolution graphics and is ideal for variable data such as serial numbers, barcodes, and UID codes. Laser annealing creates a dark, corrosion-resistant mark without breaching the surface, which makes it well-suited to medical and surgical instrument identification where surface integrity is critical.

Screen-Printed Stainless Steel

For multi-color logos and instructional graphics, durable epoxy inks are screen-printed onto the stainless surface. Screen printing offers design flexibility and strong color and pairs well with brushed or bead-blasted finishes for a professional look.

Stainless Steel vs. Aluminum Nameplates: Which Material Is Right for Your Application?

Stainless steel and aluminum are the two most common metals used for industrial nameplates, and each delivers distinct advantages depending on your environment, budget, and performance requirements.

As a full-service nameplate manufacturer with 60+ years of expertise in materials, Hallmark Nameplate helps engineers and purchasing teams select the right substrate for every project.

Side-by-Side Comparison Table

Weight Heavier (~7.9 g/cm3). Adds significant mass to equipment. Lightweight (~2.7 g/cm3). Roughly one-third the weight of stainless steel.
Corrosion Resistance Excellent natively via the chromium oxide layer. Best in high-chloride and high-acid environments, especially 316. Excellent when anodized; the natural oxide layer self-heals. Superior in marine and chemical environments with 5005 alloy.
Temperature Resistance Withstands very high heat (up to ~1500F / 815C for 304/316). Best for high-heat exhaust and engine applications. Effective to ~400F for standard anodized; MetalPhoto withstands sustained heat to ~650F.
Graphic Sharpness Good. Etching and engraving produce strong, durable marks but less fine detail than aluminum photo-imaging. Superior. Anodized and MetalPhoto processes deliver sharper text and finer barcode resolution.
Abrasion Resistance Good. Resists scratching and maintains structural integrity under heavy use. Good to excellent depending on finish; anodized aluminum is very hard at the surface.
Formability Formable but requires more tooling force; complex shapes increase cost. Highly malleable. Easy to die-cut into complex shapes, bend, and form.
Cost Higher material cost; more expensive to machine and finish. Lower material and fabrication cost; cost-effective at most thicknesses.
Outdoor Durability Indefinite lifespan in most outdoor environments without additional finishing. 20+ years with the MetalPhoto process; anodized finishes provide excellent UV resistance.
Best Applications High-heat engine plates, chemical processing equipment, food-grade (316) applications, marine and structural ID plates. Asset tags, serial plates, control panels, barcode/UID labels, aerospace ID plates.

When your application demands extreme heat tolerance, direct contact with corrosive acids or chlorides, or a food-grade surface, stainless steel is the better choice. For lighter-weight asset tags and the sharpest possible graphics, aluminum often wins. Hallmark Nameplate manufactures both materials in-house, so the recommendation is based on your application, not on what we happen to stock.
