Polyester (Mylar®)

Mylar Formulation and Characteristics

Polyester, also known as Mylar® (its brand name), is made from stretched polyethylene terephthalate (PET). It’s ideal for harsh indoor and outdoor environments. It’s UV resistant, won’t fade in the sun, and is non-yellowing. Mylar is also electrical resistant and can withstand extreme temperatures, water, abrasion, and chemicals. This extremely durable and highly versatile material can meet rigorous specifications for high tensile strength, durability, resistance to solvents, clarity, resistance to shrinking and stretching, and low electrical conduction. It also resists tears and won’t become brittle when used outdoors.

Features and Uses of Mylar Polyester Labels

Mylar is well suited for commercial as well as industrial applications. Common uses for Mylar nameplates include asset tags, product identification, faceplates, control panels, and overlays. Mylar can be used as the base material for the nameplate, and it can also be used as a top overlaminate (protective overlay) over a nameplate made from another material.

LEXAN

hallmark__polycarbonate-content-image--lexan-8010

With selective textures and adhesives, different parts of the Lexan™ nameplate are treated in different ways. Usually, the finished nameplate has the finish/texture of the base material and the graphics are reverse printed on the untextured underside of the material.

We can apply (print or laminate) finishes/textures on the top side, covering the entire surface, or print only in certain areas selectively. For example, we can take a glossy polyester nameplate and print a selective velvet texture over everything except for the company logo graphic and text. This makes the logo “pop out” from the background.

The adhesive is usually rolled on and covers the entire underside of the nameplate. It can have holes selectively cut in it for transparent windows. Windows are areas with no printing which may or may not have adhesive.

Lexan nameplates can be designed to UL® or CSA-approved specifications.
